The power of Awareness… Finding The Root Cause To Your Hair Loss

Life seems to pass us by so quickly and we are all so busy in our everyday lives that we sometimes forget to stop for a moment and take a look around. Awareness, I have realised that I lock myself in a cocoon of thoughts when I am super busy and so I decided to set myself a challenge. For 30 days I would take some time out from my day to scribble down all the random things I had seen or noticed about myself throughout the day.

When I first started doing the challenge I was writing down little things like today a butterfly flew past me or that my favourite word is flutter bye.

But as each day past I started to realise that I am not a great sleeper, I fidget a lot, I can’t sit still for long periods of time, I drink far too much caffeine, I don’t drink enough water during the day….The list is endless.

When trying to tackle hair loss, everyone always says you need to find the root cause, you need to identify when it started, why it started. These questions can only be answered by root-cause-forensicsbeing aware of what you do, your habits, your favourite snacks, the times you eat in the day, how long you sleep, it is this awareness that will help you identify what the key drivers for your hair loss really are.

Take time out of your day to distance yourself from the world that surrounds you, ask yourself meaningful questions and change habits that you know are damaging your body, and you can always contact us for any help or advice!

What do you do for a living? Do you work in an office? a call centre? or are you one of the lucky few who are on your summer holidays from school and at this very moment you are twiddling your thumbs as you stare into the abyss.

Whatever you’re doing, you are under stress. It may not feel like it, but we are always in a constant state of stress.

Stress keeps the world revolving. To live, you have to work. All this work and activity that keeps you busy, forces you to stay focused. This not only tires your mind, but it destroys your body day by day. Every component of your body has its own cycle. But a tired body ruins these cycles. It can cause hypertension, diabetes, chronic headaches and also, hair loss.

Your hair cycle consists of three phases: the growth phase, rest phase and shedding phase. When you are under severe stress, the shedding phase starts earlier which results in dramatic hair loss.

Now this may sound like doom and gloom, but there is a silver lining! This process is completely reversible. Once your stress levels have subsided, your hair starts repairing itself and your hair cycle will return back to its usual state.

Horrible hormones, we cant live with them and yet we cant live without them. Many people do not relate hormones to hair, however, the balance of our 4 main hormones play a massive role on the healthiness of our hair.

Estrogen.

Estrogen is the most vital hormone in a woman. It energises you, improves your mood and plays a major role in maintaining youthfulness. Yet too much estrogen leads to hair thinning. Estrogen levels can rise as a consequence of many factors for example, sudden weight gain or pregnancy. Therefore it is important to have blood tests whenever you experience a rapid loss of hair.

Insulin

Insulin is best known for its ability to maintain blood sugar levels, however, it also affects hair growth. A study into cardiovascular risk found that people with insulin resistance are more likely to suffer androgenic alopecia.

Testosterone

Excess testosterone levels in women can have a detrimental effect on hair retention on the scalp. The balance between Testosterone and Estrogen is often the root cause for many hair loss cases in women.

Thyroids

Fluctuating thyroid levels often cause thinning of the scalp as a consequence of a hormonal imbalance. Thus the health of your liver is majorly important to the health of your hair.

A variety of factors are cause alopecia areata, including severe stress. With alopecia areata, the body’s immune system attacks hair follicles which causes hair to fall out.

It is extremely important to point out that hair loss as a result of high levels of stress is not permanent and can be reversed. By controlling the levels of stress in one’s life, hormones remain balanced which once again allows natural hair growth to resume which reduces the rate at which hair falls out.
